But, November saw <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d3f4f615-f520-4abe-9fbd-5d0d695b46dd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stronger growth in retail sales than forecasted<\/a><\/strong>, with heavy and extended Black Friday discounting said to be key drivers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns pt-2 pb-3 is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center pb-5, pt-3 is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<p>Some UK retailers reported an increase of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fashionunited.uk\/news\/retail\/black-friday-2023-marks-record-online-spending-in-the-uk\/2023112572769\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">8% footfall in stores over the Black Friday<\/a><\/strong> weekend when compared to the previous week, and overall <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.retailgazette.co.uk\/blog\/2023\/11\/black-friday-2023-john-lewis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Black Friday sales grew 4.1% on last year to \u00a31.04 bn<\/a><\/strong>.<br><br>Meanwhile, performance in December was less strong with growth below the average of 2023 and sales volumes <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-68027820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">falling by 3.2%<\/a><\/strong>, the sharpest drop since the UK was in lockdown. Even as 59% of consumers say they actively seek deals and discounts more than previously due to the increased cost of living, the beauty industry still saw some growth.<br><br>Paul Martin, UK Head of Retail at KPMG comments that<a href=\"https:\/\/brc.org.uk\/insight\/content\/retail-sales\/retail-sales-monitor\/reports\/202312_uk_rsm\/\"> <\/a>\u2018Christmas shoppers ditched clothing, jewelry and technology gifts opting for beauty, health and personal care products, which, along with food and drink drove festive sales this year\u2019. The beauty industry appears to be bucking the trend as people spend less on clothing, eating out, electronics and sports goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Beauty Really Recession-Proof?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So why was beauty shopping less prone to squeezes in consumer spending power over 2023 peak?<br>Beauty clearly continues to be a popular choice for gifting. As Helen Dickinson OBE, CEO of British Retail Consortium states, beauty gifts \u2018were the standout performer\u2019 when it came to Christmas sales. For example, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thembsgroup.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Covid-19-and-the-beauty-industry_.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in the weeks after lockdown, fragrance company Diptyque, saw candle sales increase 536% and Selfridges reported beauty as its strongest category<\/a><\/strong>. Coined the \u2018lipstick effect\u2019, the theory suggests that despite tough economic conditions, consumers still choose to purchase luxury products but opt for lower cost items such as lipsticks.<br><br>Is beauty recession-proof? Evidence shows the beauty industry holds up comparatively well when the economy downturns. Could it be the attitude change that looking and feeling good is now a necessity rather than a luxury to many? Rather than spending hundreds to feel good at a spa for example, do consumers get the same pick-me-up feeling from new beauty products? Are beauty consumers some of the most loyal?<br><br>While all these are contributory factors, it\u2019s unclear exactly why beauty sales continue to hold up under today\u2019s economic pressure. What we do know is that when it comes to peak season 2023, many of ILG\u2019s customers hit the ground running, with healthier-than-ever order volumes.
